DREW PARTRIDGE'S ART 2 FINAL BLOG Number One: The two pieces above show my growth as an artist in various different ways. The top piece is a pen and ink fish that I enjoyed making, and I grew as an artist by branching out and trying a new method of art that I had never done before. I struggled with the shading and value, making the fish look life-like was very hard. I don't really love the shading, I think it needs to blend together more, but all in all it was a fun and pretty successful piece. I learned that shading is really just a lot of carefully blended cross hatching, and that shading is hard than it looks. I will do a little more research before starting shading and adding value to a drawing again, maybe watch some videos or get some help on how to improve my skills. The second piece is a paper cut-out of a view from Chimney Rock in NC. I took this picture on vacation, and thought it was so pretty that I had to try and turn it into art. I love cutting out construction paper and painted paper to create scenes from nature. This was one of my first ones. I did not get to finish cutting out all the leaves, as you can see some of the trees are missing leaves. I struggled with time for this project, but also conveying distance. This piece isn't the best to me because the background doesn't fade out and the proportions are all off. This piece taught me to be careful of how I choose to execute my project, especially regarding time. I ran out of time before the deadline and was not able to finish. This piece helps remind me that I need to pick a manageable piece of art. Number Two: My artistic strengths are attention to detail, being able to use a variety of different methods of art, and drawing with colored pencils. My artistic weaknesses are painting, making people look life-like, and creating human body parts, like hands, noses, faces, on paper. I enjoy art a lot, but have many places that I can improve my artistic skills. I can practice with paint as I move forward in the art program, because I really like the way that paint looks and it is fun to make art with, but I am not good at it. I would really like to get better at painting. I can practice painting, watch videos and get some advice from teachers and peers to improve my art skills. Number Three: I struggled with the painting above for several reasons. The biggest reason I struggled with this piece is because I am not good at painting. I rarely paint unless I have to, but i enjoyed this project, even though I do not love the way this piece turned out. I think there is not enough value and shading, and the house needed a lot more detail. I thought it was a fun idea and I enjoyed brainstorming and drawing the draft for this piece out, but I did not enjoy the painting part. I need to practice my painting skills. I struggled with the sky in and the alien a lot because I couldn't find the shade of purple for the sky that I liked. Then Mrs. Buch taught me about washes with paints. I used lots of washes with this piece to create the shade of purple that I needed for the sky. The man is not very life-like and I probably should have spent more time on him, but I spent the majority of my time on the sky and house in the background. I would probably change this project to make paint a choice in the art medium we used. I would have loved to use prisma colors or colored pencils. I just did not enjoy the painting part, but everything else about this piece was fun and enjoyable. Number Four: The above piece is one of my favorite pieces because I liked the way it turned out. Originally I was just messing around and started drawing animals. Then I began spending lots of time and getting the animals just the way I wanted them. I like this piece because it's just a collection of my successful animal sketches. I enjoyed this piece a lot because I like drawing and coloring with colored pencils, which is what I used for this piece. When putting them all together my art teacher then, Mr. Sands, suggested that I leave a little of the white paper left around the edges of the animals, so the look like stickers. I tried this idea and I like it. I think this piece reflects me as an artist because it shows how much time I took on each of these animals and the detail I put into them. I like working down to the last detail, it is fun to make my art as clear cut and realistic as possible for me. I like this piece a lot. I think this piece is better because I think I took a lot more time than I usually would with this piece. This is a good piece because of the time I invested and my love for using colored pencils. I really enjoyed this piece and think it is one of my most successful ones.
