Q1: After comparing my two pieces of art work, the older one with colored pencils and the most recent with paint, I noticed a few big differences. One of the first things I noticed was that my most recent on was a lot neater and much brighter and eye catching. The lines are more defined and my over-all sketching skills have increased dramatically over the semester in my most recent piece. Q2: a. My Identity artwork is a sculpture of two Apex High School Lacrosse players celebrating after a hard earned goal. It relates to our culture as Americans because we stress team work. In my family as well as a country we stress supporting each other and working hard, so that we can achieve great things. Also, in the culture of America sports are a big deal, colleges hand out huge scholarships to athletes and athletes are paid millions of dollars at the professional level. This influenced me to create a sculpture about sports, because I like sports, and I am on many teams. The main influence on my artwork from the culture I live in was the theme of hard work. In my family, on my lacrosse team, and at school hard work is always expected and i wanted to illustrate the hard work that goes into a goal in lacrosse in my artwork. In order to score you need to train and exercise hard at practice, and work hard in the games, concentrating and giving it everything you have. Then there is the relief and joy you feel when all the hard work pays off. This is what I tried to convey in my sculpture of two lacrosse players. c. My work symbolizes and comments on the good in humanity and the culture we are all a part of, because it shows the love and support and good times we as friends and family and team-mates have for each other. It critiques the positive and uplifting things that we as humans do in our cultures. Because the two team-mates have their arms around each other and are happy because they just scored a goal, it shows the support and team work and love and bonding the team has created as it goes through out its season. I tried to comment or outline the positive things in our culture with this artwork, because I like to focus on the positive. I believe this sculpture comments on and portrays the positive elements of our culture, which are love, kindness, team-work, celebration, happiness, success, and excitement. Q3: I enjoyed the sculpture and 3D art the best, my favorite was using clay and painting it. I also enjoyed the still life paintings we did sometimes. I loved the class as it is, I liked how we had one on one instruction with Mrs. Purtee and we were able to increase our artistic skill. I also liked how we were able to socialize as we worked. The only thing I would add is more freedom to choose what medium we want to make our artwork with. But, I also really enjoyed trying different mediums, so I probably would not change it actually. The only thing I would take away from the course is the blogs, I would rather do a presentation of our artwork instead. I really enjoyed this class and thought it was a great learning experience and it helped me increase my artists skills so much. It has been a great opportunity and learning environment for me.
