DREW PARTRIDGE'S ART 2 FINAL BLOG Number One: The two pieces above show my growth as an artist in various different ways. The top piece is a pen and ink fish that I enjoyed making, and I grew as an artist by branching out and trying a new method of art that I had never done before. I struggled with the shading and value, making the fish look life-like was very hard. I don't really love the shading, I think it needs to blend together more, but all in all it was a fun and pretty successful piece. I learned that shading is really just a lot of carefully blended cross hatching, and that shading is hard than it looks. I will do a little more research before starting shading and adding value to a drawing again, maybe watch some videos or get some help on how to improve my skills. The second piece is a paper cut-out of a view from Chimney Rock in NC. I took this picture on vacation, and thought it was so pretty that I had to try and turn it into art. I love cutting out construction paper and painted paper to create scenes from nature. This was one of my first ones. I did not get to finish cutting out all the leaves, as you can see some of the trees are missing leaves. I struggled with time for this project, but also conveying distance. This piece isn't the best to me because the background doesn't fade out and the proportions are all off. This piece taught me to be careful of how I choose to execute my project, especially regarding time. I ran out of time before the deadline and was not able to finish. This piece helps remind me that I need to pick a manageable piece of art. Number Two: My artistic strengths are attention to detail, being able to use a variety of different methods of art, and drawing with colored pencils. My artistic weaknesses are painting, making people look life-like, and creating human body parts, like hands, noses, faces, on paper. I enjoy art a lot, but have many places that I can improve my artistic skills. I can practice with paint as I move forward in the art program, because I really like the way that paint looks and it is fun to make art with, but I am not good at it. I would really like to get better at painting. I can practice painting, watch videos and get some advice from teachers and peers to improve my art skills. Number Three: I struggled with the painting above for several reasons. The biggest reason I struggled with this piece is because I am not good at painting. I rarely paint unless I have to, but i enjoyed this project, even though I do not love the way this piece turned out. I think there is not enough value and shading, and the house needed a lot more detail. I thought it was a fun idea and I enjoyed brainstorming and drawing the draft for this piece out, but I did not enjoy the painting part. I need to practice my painting skills. I struggled with the sky in and the alien a lot because I couldn't find the shade of purple for the sky that I liked. Then Mrs. Buch taught me about washes with paints. I used lots of washes with this piece to create the shade of purple that I needed for the sky. The man is not very life-like and I probably should have spent more time on him, but I spent the majority of my time on the sky and house in the background. I would probably change this project to make paint a choice in the art medium we used. I would have loved to use prisma colors or colored pencils. I just did not enjoy the painting part, but everything else about this piece was fun and enjoyable. Number Four: The above piece is one of my favorite pieces because I liked the way it turned out. Originally I was just messing around and started drawing animals. Then I began spending lots of time and getting the animals just the way I wanted them. I like this piece because it's just a collection of my successful animal sketches. I enjoyed this piece a lot because I like drawing and coloring with colored pencils, which is what I used for this piece. When putting them all together my art teacher then, Mr. Sands, suggested that I leave a little of the white paper left around the edges of the animals, so the look like stickers. I tried this idea and I like it. I think this piece reflects me as an artist because it shows how much time I took on each of these animals and the detail I put into them. I like working down to the last detail, it is fun to make my art as clear cut and realistic as possible for me. I like this piece a lot. I think this piece is better because I think I took a lot more time than I usually would with this piece. This is a good piece because of the time I invested and my love for using colored pencils. I really enjoyed this piece and think it is one of my most successful ones.

My essential question was: "What is natural beauty and pride for country?" I combined two questions that I liked and decided to make a piece of art using this question. I took an interesting path in my media I used to create my artwork. I decided to only cut out and glue construction paper together to create a piece of scenery. I choose the sight Chimney Rock in Western NC, because the West NC mountains are beautiful and the flag of USA shows pride for country. This piece is not quite finished. I am in the middle of cutting out millions of tiny leaves and its a pain but it should look pretty cool when its done. I like this piece of art.
During this unit we were assigned to pick an item to portray a story about. I picked a tire as my item because I thought it was a very cool item and there was a very unique story line I could follow. I decided to tell a story through my art work about the life of the tire. First the tire is made at a beautiful but not eco-friendly factory. Then it was sold as a shiny new tire to a proud Jeep owner. The Jeep owner used this tire on his sick souped up Jeep for many years. Then one unfortunate day the tire got a hole and caused the Jeep owner to say many unkind words as the tire was taken off the Jeep and was sadly abandoned on the side of the road. This is the story of the life of the tire as it continued down the road of life as I portrayed in my lovely landscape I cut out of construction paper.
This was my first Art 2 project and I really enjoyed it. I liked free handing animals and drawing and coloring them. I like drawing animals because the are cool and exciting. I really enjoyed this theme of artists are self directed because I like to do what my creativity leads me to do . Not follow a strict rules on what your art can and can't be. I really liked coloring these animals in, it was fun to compare them to the real images I had. I then mounted them all on a beautiful green poster board because I wanted to see them all together. The colors blend well together and I think the blue whale and the black gorilla stand out a lot making them pop out. I really liked Project 1 and can't wait for Project 2 because art is cool.
Q1: After comparing my two pieces of art work, the older one with colored pencils and the most recent with paint, I noticed a few big differences. One of the first things I noticed was that my most recent on was a lot neater and much brighter and eye catching. The lines are more defined and my over-all sketching skills have increased dramatically over the semester in my most recent piece. Q2: a. My Identity artwork is a sculpture of two Apex High School Lacrosse players celebrating after a hard earned goal. It relates to our culture as Americans because we stress team work. In my family as well as a country we stress supporting each other and working hard, so that we can achieve great things. Also, in the culture of America sports are a big deal, colleges hand out huge scholarships to athletes and athletes are paid millions of dollars at the professional level. This influenced me to create a sculpture about sports, because I like sports, and I am on many teams. The main influence on my artwork from the culture I live in was the theme of hard work. In my family, on my lacrosse team, and at school hard work is always expected and i wanted to illustrate the hard work that goes into a goal in lacrosse in my artwork. In order to score you need to train and exercise hard at practice, and work hard in the games, concentrating and giving it everything you have. Then there is the relief and joy you feel when all the hard work pays off. This is what I tried to convey in my sculpture of two lacrosse players. c. My work symbolizes and comments on the good in humanity and the culture we are all a part of, because it shows the love and support and good times we as friends and family and team-mates have for each other. It critiques the positive and uplifting things that we as humans do in our cultures. Because the two team-mates have their arms around each other and are happy because they just scored a goal, it shows the support and team work and love and bonding the team has created as it goes through out its season. I tried to comment or outline the positive things in our culture with this artwork, because I like to focus on the positive. I believe this sculpture comments on and portrays the positive elements of our culture, which are love, kindness, team-work, celebration, happiness, success, and excitement. Q3: I enjoyed the sculpture and 3D art the best, my favorite was using clay and painting it. I also enjoyed the still life paintings we did sometimes. I loved the class as it is, I liked how we had one on one instruction with Mrs. Purtee and we were able to increase our artistic skill. I also liked how we were able to socialize as we worked. The only thing I would add is more freedom to choose what medium we want to make our artwork with. But, I also really enjoyed trying different mediums, so I probably would not change it actually. The only thing I would take away from the course is the blogs, I would rather do a presentation of our artwork instead. I really enjoyed this class and thought it was a great learning experience and it helped me increase my artists skills so much. It has been a great opportunity and learning environment for me.
I used planning ideas like the Pintrest Board, sketching it out, mind map, and resource images. I made a resource image for my print making, and I used Pintrest and a sketch for both my giraffe and my bird print. This helped me visualize my art work and helped my art work be more accurate. I was also able to focus more and know what steps I needed to do inorder to complete my project. I was inspired by Pintrest on my giraffe pot. It looked like a cool idea to make a clay potter so I decided to put my own twist on it. I was inspired by my sister to create my bird print. She wanted me to make something for her and so I asked her what she wanted me to make. I am very pleased with the final outcome of my work, and I hope my sister is too. I like it because its neat for the most part and I like the contrast with the white and black on the bird print. I like to have a more free and open topic for choosing what I work on for my art work. I like to have lots of choice and be able to be inspired by myself. I like that because then I can use whatever medium and depict whatever I want. I like to create animals out of clay and I couldn't do that with most themes. Overall, I like having a free with lots of choice environment for art work, because I can do what I like to do and express myself better.
My art work is about the team work of two lacrosse players as they celebrate a goal. I choose to position the players with their arms around each other and their other arms raised to show the expression of victory. I choose to interpret the theme of identity with the Apex lacrosse team. I wanted to illustrate the victory and celebration of a goal after all the hard work at practice and during the game. I also choose to interpret identity by giving the two players pictured the same jersey numbers as the two hardest working guys on my lacrosse team. I experimented with scuplty and clay, I also sketched out my ideas. One other thing I did to plan was make a flow chart and a mind map.
I used the clay medium and it worked well and I am very happy with my final result. I used clay to make a 3D structure and illustrate the work of team work and hard work. I also used the clay medium to express the theme of happiness and no worries by creating a character from a popular movie and I enscribed his motto on the back. I think I conveyed my themes of identity and illustration very well and I am satisfied with my work. After this unit I have begun to think of limitations not as limitations but as new opportunities. Because we have challenges we have to think outside the box inorder to overcome limitations and create artwork. Since limitations are new opportunities it helps me overcome challenges in my artwork. The limitation I choose was using only dots and my non-dominant hand to create pictures. I also did a seperate piece where I could only use my non-dominant hand and with my eyes completely closed. I am extremely happy with the way the dotted pieces turned out, but the eyes closed did not turn out like I hoped. I choose these limitations because they seemed fun to try. I also choose the dot limitation because I wanted to illustrate how something small can make an impact, like the small dots can make a larger picture of Easter related items, but it takes all the dots together to create a final finished piece.
I learned that observation is hard to capture what you see and then transfer it onto paper. I learned some techniques for giving your art work depth. By shading in or making sections of the art work darker than the rest of the piece it gives the art piece a look of depth. I tried to convey a scene of looking underwater in a pond, and to do this I had too use a tricky point of view. I searched for photos online that would help me with this hard perspective on my piece. I learned that observation is a fun form of art and although it is tricky to transfer what you see onto paper, it is interesting and enjoyable. I used the techniques Mrs. Purtee taught us about observational art to create my art work. I took pictures of what I like to do but also of just me being silly. I like to be relaxed and funny and that is what my pictures convey. I used skills like reflection and depth but also having things go off the page and rule of thirds and lighting. I also experimented with reflection and depth in my art pieces. I enjoyed this project and it helped me learn and grow as an artist.
There where several successes and challenges in my art work as I worked on my mountain landscape piece. One major challenge that I had was portraying distance in my piece. In order to make the mountains seem distant I changed the size of the trees. One major success that I had was creating the reflection of the mountains and trees on the surface of the lake. I used a system of dashes to create a rippled and watery reflection on the lake. I had many success and challenges in my work on this piece.
